I got Ireland on my mind, but it has been moved to the back for the time being. On Tuesday, March 9th, I have been given the opportunity to speak/preach to the Jericho Project, a group of prison inmates and Nashville's CCA prison. I have been a mentor of a young man there named Cory Edison for about a year and have also become friends with some of the Men of Valor staff, who in conjunction with Cory, have asked me to speak.
I am excited about this because God has given me a message I believe these men need to hear. They may have heard it before, but they need to hear it over and over again. My audience will be a mix of believers and non-believers, so my purpose is two-fold: For the non-believer to believe in the sufficiency of Christ crucified and for the believer to understand that the gospel is sufficient not only to save, but to sustain them through hard times.
My text is Romans 8:1-4. In a previous post, I mentioned my attempts to memorize this glorious chapter, and I have succeeded in memorizing the first eight verses. These men will all struggle in various ways when they are released from prison (and they will all be released within the next two years, that is the nature of the program) and they will all fail at some point. At the heart of the matter is not whether they then avoid or reduce their sins, but whether they will believe that through Christ Jesus there is now no condemnation "the morning after the failure" (J. Piper). If they trust in the steadfast love of God in the very moments of shame, this will be what, ultimately, leads them to repentance. (As C. Crenshaw says, "Grace always bears fruit") If they don't know themselves loved by God through the cross of Christ, they may reform themselves by their own efforts or they may give up and revert back to their old lifestyle. Either way, they will ultimately resent God.
Through Jesus, the love of God is incorruptible. This is the only thing on which we can rely, not our good works, not our love for God, as I have seen in my own life that these things change day by day, second by second.
My prayer is that these men would know themselves loved and redeemed by the atoning work of Jesus Christ! Please pray that they will believe this. Please pray that I will continually believe this.
